Canadian Red Cross Programming Available for Households Affected by 2023 Alberta Wildfires

The County encourages residents to explore these current opportunities and apply for supports.

The Canadian Red Cross has programming available for County residents impacted by area wildfires this spring. Whether you're looking for assistance in recovery from the event or increasing resilience to future events the Canadian Red Cross has supports waiting for you.

Support for households impacted by the 2023 Alberta Wildfires - Canadian Red Cross

 

The following is a brief overview on the programs:

Residential Maintenance

  • Eligible Applicants can receive up to $1500 for expenses related to help prevent wildfires.
  • These are simple tasks that can be taken on by people themselves or with a bit of extra help included.
    • Roof maintenance/ repairs
    • Repairs on external parts of the house including windows, doors, and siding.
    • Removing plants and materials and pruning trees
    • A comprehensive list of activities can be found on the website listed above.
  • Applications are open between November 10, 2023 – February 29, 2024. 

Residential Mitigation

  • Eligible Applicants can receive up to $1500 in reimbursement for expenses related to activities that help reduce the risk of wildfire and extreme heat in your home.
  • Activities include projects that may require a contractor or profession to complete properly.
    • Replacing roofs with fire rated roofing materials
    • Replacing exterior flammable materials such as siding, decks, doors, windows, and awnings with fire rated materials
    • Install or replace air conditioners.
    • Replacing lights
    • Installing heat resistant blinds

  • Reimbursements will be for activities that are completed after November 10, 2023
  • Applications are open between November 10, 2023 – February 29, 2024.

Personalized Recovery Support

This support is for those who have had major damage or whose homes have been destroyed by the 2023 wildfires. The Red Cross case management team will work directly with individuals to provide individualized supports in navigating their recovery journey. This support is open to those who:

  • Are residents of Alberta and have a primary residence that is in a community that was under evacuation order or alert during the 2023 Alberta Wildfires  
  • Are a homeowner, are a tenant or live in a community-owned home
  • Have a primary residence that incurred major damage (damage that endangers the home or makes it unsafe to live in) or was destroyed by the 2023 Alberta Wildfires
