Understanding the County's Stray Dog Impound Process

The County’s Enforcement Services department understands how upsetting it can be when a family pet goes missing. When officers respond to calls involving stray dogs, their goal is always to protect the safety of the community while doing everything possible to reunite pets with their owners.

When a dog is found running at large, officers are required under municipal bylaws and the Alberta Animal Protection Act to impound the animal. This helps prevent accidents, injuries, or harm to the dog. From the time of impoundment, the owner has 3 days for non-purebred or 10 days for purebred hounds to redeem their dog by providing proof of ownership and paying the applicable impound fees.

To help owners locate their pets as quickly as possible, photos and brief descriptions of impounded dogs are shared on the County’s official social media channels as soon as possible following impoundment, along with instructions on how to contact the Enforcement Services department. This step is an important part of the County’s effort to reunite lost dogs with their families.

If a dog is not redeemed within the timeframe, the County must follow legislative requirements that allow the animal to be adopted, transferred to a rescue organization, sold, or humanely euthanized. These decisions are never taken lightly and are considered a last resort.

Residents can help prevent these situations by ensuring their dogs are properly licenced, securely contained, and wearing identification or are microchipped. These simple steps greatly increase the likelihood of a quick and happy reunion.
