On December 15, 2023, Lac Ste. Anne County accepted an offer to settle the Administration Building lawsuit against the parties who designed and built it. The settlement funds ($8,456,000) have been invested in a secure growth savings account until required.

During the lawsuit, comprehensive expert investigations and assessments were conducted. They indicated that the damage to the Administration Building was extensive, required monitoring due to its ongoing nature, and was economically not feasible to fully repair the building. Therefore, the council accepted the conclusion that the most reasonable long-term option would be replacing the building.

The County continues to monitor the building to ensure its safety and operability, and experts have confirmed that the structure remains safe. Accordingly, the County currently has no plans to incur the cost and disruption of any significant capital project related to the Administration Building.

In a further effort to maximize recovery for the damages to the Administration Building, the County has been pursuing a property insurance claim. The building was insured through an insurance program with the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA), an organization dedicated to serving its members, including Lac Ste. Anne County. Despite attempts to resolve this matter amicably with the RMA, the County has been compelled to initiate another lawsuit. It is currently in the early stages of litigation. The County will continue to work to reasonably resolve the dispute with the RMA insurance program.

We will provide further information on the above through future media releases. However, based on advice from the County’s legal counsel, only limited information about this matter can be shared at this time.

The Lac Ste. Anne County Administration, Reeve, and Council remain resolute in their commitment to represent and protect the interests of our community. Together, we will navigate these challenges, ensuring taxpayer dollars are safeguarded, and our County’s future is secure. We sincerely thank the ratepayers for their understanding and cooperation throughout this process.

“We are committed to safeguarding taxpayer dollars and ensuring a secure future for our County, [and] sincerely thank our residents for their patience and understanding as we navigate this complex situation.”
