Lac Ste. Anne County is joining communities across Canada in recognizing Rail Safety Week, taking place September 15–21, 2025.

The proclamation, signed by Reeve Joe Blakeman on September 4, highlights the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of railway crossings and trespassing. In 2024 alone, there were 261 railway crossing and trespassing incidents in Canada, resulting in 68 preventable fatalities and 58 serious injuries.

“Educating and informing the public about rail safety can save lives,” said Reeve Blakeman. “By reminding people that railway rights-of-way are private property and by encouraging everyone to look, listen, and obey traffic laws near railways, we can reduce these avoidable tragedies.”

The County’s proclamation supports the efforts of CN Rail and Operation Lifesaver, a national public–private partnership dedicated to rail safety education in collaboration with governments, Indigenous communities, police services, media, and the rail industry.
