Former Lac Ste. Anne County Reeve Passes Away, Leaving Behind a Lasting Legacy
Honouring Former County Reeve Derril Butler
It is with deep sorrow that the community of Lac Ste. Anne County mourns the passing of former Lac Ste. Anne County Reeve Derril Butler who passed away on January 8, 2025. Mr. Butler, who served on County Council from 1995 – 2005, serving as Reeve for 10 of those years, was a beloved figure whose leadership and unwavering commitment to the people of the County made a lasting impact on both the local community and the surrounding region.
During his time in office, Mr. Butler worked tirelessly to address the unique challenges facing the rural communities, from advocating for infrastructure development to supporting local agriculture and small businesses. His leadership was marked by an open-door policy and an ability to bring people together. His dedication to the community was evident in the countless hours he spent working behind the scenes to ensure the needs of his constituents were met.

One of his most significant accomplishments was work with the County Library Board and Yellowhead Regional Library, which he was instrumental in modernizing the funding model as used to this day. Outside of his professional duties, Derril Butler was known for his kindness and generosity, and love of music and the arts. Whether attending community events, volunteering at local charities, or simply chatting with neighbours, he made everyone feel valued and heard. His deep connection with the people earned him the respect and admiration of many.
As the community reflects on Mr. Butler’s remarkable contributions, his legacy will be carried forward by those who were inspired by him. While his passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, his influence will continue to shape the future of Onoway and the greater regional area.
