County Officials Tour Heidelberg Materials Operations
Council and Administration gain firsthand look at regional aggregate operations
Members of Council and County Administration recently toured Heidelberg Materials’ Villeneuve-area operations, gaining a firsthand look at the infrastructure, production processes, and environmental management practices behind one of the region’s key resource-based industries.
The tour offered an overview of the company's aggregate extraction and processing activities and the important role Heidelberg Materials plays in supplying materials for infrastructure projects across the region. Participants followed the journey of aggregate materials from extraction through processing and explored the planning, regulatory requirements, and land stewardship measures that support responsible resource development.
"Heidelberg Materials wishes to be an important industry partner within Lac Ste. Anne County,” said Chief Administrative Officer Ann Mitchell. “Experiences like this help Council and Administration better understand local operations, industry challenges, and the significant contributions these businesses make to our local economy and infrastructure.”
Formerly known as Lehigh Hanson and Inland Aggregates in North America, Heidelberg Materials is a leading supplier of heavy construction materials currently operating adjacent to Lac Ste. Anne County. The company specializes in aggregate extraction, producing sand, gravel, crushed stone, and washed rock used in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, commercial developments, and residential projects throughout Alberta.
In addition to aggregate production, Heidelberg Materials processes raw materials into ready-mix concrete and asphalt that support municipal infrastructure projects and private-sector development. Regional processing and distribution facilities located near major transportation corridors help ensure efficient delivery of materials across the area.

Heidelberg Materials also maintains a significant presence in the local economy as an employer of heavy equipment operators, drivers, engineers, and other skilled workers. The company contributes to municipalities through industrial taxation and participation in environmental stewardship initiatives, including involvement with organizations such as the West Central Airshed Society and Earth Rangers.
During the tour, County representatives also learned about the regulatory framework governing gravel pit operations. Activities are subject to municipal permitting requirements, provincial environmental legislation, and detailed reclamation plans designed to return lands to productive future uses, including agriculture or managed water bodies following extraction.
The tour highlighted the importance of collaboration and open communication between industry and local government as both work toward supporting sustainable economic development and responsible resource management within Lac Ste. Anne County.
