This year our tour focussed on the Alberta Beach area. Because of the size of the county, we cannot always visit every nominated/winning yard in each category. Our prize winning yard stops included the yardscapes of:
Chris & Wayne Yeoman
Karen & Bob Beekman
Sandy & Larry Primeau
While en route to our winning yards we were so fortunate to be invited into the Summer Village of Castle Island to tour 2 amazing yards and gardens in their beautiful community. Thank you to Ann & Marvin Kapty and Deb Rosen & Warren Jukes for their hospitality and talents.
With a stop at the Alberta Beach Museum - Heritage Village. Their staff and volunteers were outstanding, as they facilitated the perfect picnic lunch location. With enough time built into the lunch hour, the group took in some of the museum buildings and displays by local artists.
Lunch was provided by:
- Mama’s in the Kitchen, Alberta Beach
Snacks provided by:
- Pembina West Co-op, Mayerthorpe
- Hill and Dale Farm, Cherhill.
Many thanks to our photographer Doris Nickel. Each year she designs a beautiful keepsake photobook for the yards participating in the tour.
This competition would not be possible without the landowners! Our deepest gratitude for their skills, creativity and dedication. Their willingness to invite a coach bus load of visitors into their yards and share their stories of how they developed their landscapes is invaluable to our program.
While the visuals of the diverse yards sparked interest, creativity and photographic moments - the bus ride connecting our stops was the opportunity for participants to ask the landowners and Agriculture Services staff their questions. Great gardening conversations happened on the bus!
Another fun aspect of the tour is while wrapping up our day on the bus ride, we did a People’s Choice award survey with tour participants. The competition being close between these 3 beautiful and very distinctive yards our People’s Choice award this year went to Sandy & Larry Primeau.
Mark your calendars. Each summer on the first Thursday in August we take the annual Rural Beautification tour. We would love to have you join us next year!
