The Assessment department expanded to incorporate the related function of Taxation. The new Assessment & Taxation department provides improved integration, leading to a better customer experience, and a one stop shop for all matters relating to your tax notice.
The Assessment department has improved the quality of data used in the assessment process through enhanced processes throughout the department. The improvements have led to better scores on the annual assessment testing conducted by Alberta Municipal Affairs. In 2016, the results were an impressive 97.5% on residential and 100% on non-residential property.
In 2016, one of our Assessors became an Accredited Municipal Assessor of Alberta. Having this qualification has led to a significant cost savings as certain assessment services no longer needed to be contracted out.
Working with the Finance Department, the Assessment & Taxation department has developed a process for addressing tax recovery properties that fail to sell in the public auction that is part of the legislative process. To date, we have been able to return five properties to taxable status using this strategy.
