Spruce and Pine - Autumn Needle Browning

Over the past couple of weeks many gardeners have noticed a sudden yellowing or browning of needles on their spruce and pine trees

In most cases this is a natural, annual process- called autumn needle shed. The affected needles are closest to the trunk, while the newest needles on the outer ends of the branches should remain a healthy green colour. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry's factsheet Browning of Evergreens https://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/agdex4144 describes a number of reasons why needles may go brown.
