Background

Lac Ste. Anne County surrounds the urban areas of the Town of Mayerthorpe, Town of Onaway, Village of Alberta Beach and twelve {12) Summer Villages. The combined population of the region is 15,924 {2016 Census).

Lac Ste. Anne County receives funding from the Province of Alberta directed to the development of "locally driven, preventative social initiatives to enhance the well-being of individuals, families and communities." The Province makes it mandatory that the municipality also contribute funding to these initiatives, creating an 80/20 formula. The mandatory 20% municipal contribution is a minimum and can be exceeded if councils recognize needs are not being met within the mandatory allotment.

The preventative social needs of residents of Lac Ste. Anne County are presently being served primarily by grant funded programs allocated to community organizations by the region's municipalities. Some residents participate in programs supplied by municipalities outside of our region.

It is important to note that FCSS Programs operate independent of one another and address the identified needs of their individual municipalities. However, they work closely with other human service providers in their areas in an attempt to create a continuum of services for all residents.

The needs assessment will be an opportunity for Lac Ste. Anne County to gain a clearer understanding of the existing and future needs of our residents, and an opportunity to examine the services provided in a broader regional context.

In particular, it is an opportunity for Lac Ste. Anne County to gain the information we need to ensure that the funding we receive is strategically targeted to the areas of greatest need.
